The Pursuit of Greatness

Updated: Jul 23

Simone Biles is a name that resonates with excellence, resilience, and sheer determination. From the chalk-dusted floors of gymnastics halls to the grand stages of the Olympics and World Championships, Biles has defied gravity, shattered records, and inspired millions.  I often daydream about winning a gold medal in gymnastics. I can barely do a cartwheel let alone a backflip on a 4 inch beam, so this isn't a dream I'm ever going to work towards, but rather, one that I use for inspiration. I am determined and disciplined, but the level of discipline and determination required by Olympic athletes blows my mind.

Simone must have had an easy life with lots of privilege, right?  Wrong. Her mother struggled with substance abuse so she was raised by her grandparents. Surely this left an emotional scar, but she turned trauma into triumph by perusing a sport she loved.  She must have been born with unnatural talent, right?  Perhaps. Or perhaps there is something more to her story, like the power of the human spirit.

I had the privilege to visit Rio de Janeiro in the summer of 2016. The city was bustling with energy, excitement, and anticipation for the big games. Soon after, Simone would become a household name, clinching 1 bronze and 4 gold medals and earning the title GOAT (Greatest of All Time). Simone's dominance extends beyond the Olympics. Her 37 world championship medals - 27 of them gold - solidify her status as a gymnastics legend. She has shattered Vitaly Scherbo’s record, becoming the most decorated gymnast ever, regardless of gender.

After waiting 4 years to see what she would do in Tokoyo, I was flabbergasted when she pulled out of most events for mental health reasons. She spent her whole life working towards this goal! How could she walk away from her lifelong dream?!?!  Because she trusted her gut. She listened to her heart, which rightfully told her that some things are more important than winning. Talk about courage!

Simone’s decision to prioritize mental health in 2020 resonated globally. Her courage to step back, recalibrate, and prioritize well-being sets an example for athletes and leaders everywhere.  Her courage normalized the conversation about mental health and the fact that even the greatest of all time have limits.  And when we take time to rest and recharge, we can come back stronger than before.

Simone Biles isn’t just a gymnast, she’s a force of nature. Her journey teaches us that it's ok to say no, and true wisdom is listening to your heart.  Her journey teaches us that greatness isn’t only about gold - it’s about pushing boundaries, overcoming adversity, and leaving a legacy that transcends sport.

I hope these Olympic games leave you feeling the way I do - with inspiration and awe.
